About Trancoso
Trancoso sits on the cliffs of the discovery coast in southern Bahia, a 1.5-hour drive south of Porto Seguro. The town is small and built around a single Jesuit-era square, the Quadrado, with the beaches reached by a short walk down the cliff or by car. The atmosphere is deliberately quiet: low-rise architecture, no franchise restaurants, no traffic lights on the Quadrado. What you pay for is the absence of the things you would normally have to ignore.
Compared to Itacare further north, Trancoso is more polished and more expensive, with a stronger international clientele. Compared to Salvador, it is the inverse: rural, slow, and built around landscape rather than city life.
The Quadrado
The Quadrado is the long grass square at the heart of Trancoso, lined with low colorful colonial houses and the white Igreja de Sao Joao Batista at the eastern end overlooking the cliff. Built in the 16th century as a Jesuit mission village, the square is now Trancoso's central public space.
Daily rhythm: quiet mornings, busy late afternoons as the restaurants set up tables on the grass, and a packed sunset hour when locals and visitors gather facing the church. The cliff behind the church drops to Praia dos Coqueiros, reachable by a short trail. After dark the Quadrado lights up softly and the restaurants run late.
Best beaches near Trancoso
- Praia dos Coqueiros: closest beach, 15-minute walk down from the Quadrado. Calm water, barracas, easy access for a half-day.
- Praia dos Nativos: long sandy stretch immediately south of Coqueiros, with the most barraca infrastructure. The default beach for a full day.
- Praia do Rio da Barra: 10-minute drive north, where a freshwater river meets the sea. Quieter than Coqueiros and Nativos.
- Praia do Espelho: 30 minutes south by car. Cliffs, natural tide pools at low tide, minimal development. Routinely listed among the best beaches in Brazil. Plan a full day; check the tide chart before going.
- Praia de Caraiva: 1.5 hours south. A car-free fishing village reached by a small boat across a river. Even quieter than Trancoso. Day trip or overnight.

Combining Salvador and Trancoso?
A common shape is 3 nights Salvador, then fly to Porto Seguro for 4-5 nights in Trancoso. We can arrange the Salvador half: walking tours, airport transfer, and the flight handoff.
How to get to Trancoso from Salvador
By air (the only practical route): Salvador (SSA) to Porto Seguro (BPS), 1-hour direct flight on Azul, Latam or Gol. From Porto Seguro, transfer 80 km south by car (1.5h), including a 5-minute ferry across the Rio Buranhem at Arraial d'Ajuda. Pre-book a transfer with your hotel; group shuttles run R$80-120 per person, private cars R$300-400.
By car: 720 km, 10-11 hours of driving on a mostly two-lane highway. Worth doing only if you want to combine Trancoso with Itacare and other southern coast stops on a multi-week trip.

Where to stay in Trancoso
Trancoso is small, and most accommodation falls into three categories. Pousadas on the Quadrado are the most central and the most photographed, with rooms built into the colonial houses. Beachfront hotels along Praia dos Nativos offer direct ocean access and resort-style amenities. Pousadas in the surrounding forest are quieter and often the best value, with free shuttle service to the beach and Quadrado.
Prices in Trancoso are higher than the rest of Bahia. Book ahead in high season (December to February). For broader accommodation guidance, see where to stay in Brazil.
Best time to visit Trancoso
September to March is the best window: warm and dry, with December to February as the busiest summer peak. April and May are the rainiest months. June to August is mild and quiet, sometimes cool enough for a light layer at night, with cheaper rates and emptier beaches.
Carnival in Trancoso is more relaxed than in Salvador or Rio: smaller blocos, family atmosphere, dinners on the Quadrado.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Salvador to Trancoso?
Fly Salvador (SSA) to Porto Seguro (BPS) on a 1-hour direct flight, then transfer 80 km south by car (1.5h) including a 5-minute ferry across the Rio Buranhem. Total door to door is around 3.5 to 4 hours. Driving from Salvador is technically possible (10-11 hours) but rarely worth it for a single trip.
What is the Quadrado in Trancoso?
The Quadrado is a long grass square at the heart of Trancoso, lined with low colorful colonial houses and the Igreja de Sao Joao Batista at the eastern end. Built in the 16th century by Jesuits as a mission village, the Quadrado is now Trancoso central public space, with restaurants, design boutiques, and most of the town's daily life happening on it.
What is the best beach near Trancoso?
Praia do Espelho, 30 minutes south of Trancoso, is regularly listed among the best beaches in Brazil for its cliffs, calm tide pools at low tide, and minimal development. Trancoso itself sits above Praia dos Coqueiros (closest, 15-minute walk down from the Quadrado), Praia dos Nativos (long sandy stretch with barracas), and Praia do Rio da Barra (10-minute drive, quieter).
How many days do you need in Trancoso?
Three to five nights in Trancoso cover the Quadrado, the main beaches and a Praia do Espelho day trip. Less than three nights is not worth the flight and transfer time. A southern Bahia trip combining Itacare and Trancoso works well as 7-10 nights total.
