About Itacare

Itacare sits on the cocoa coast of southern Bahia, where the Atlantic Forest still runs to the edge of the sand. The town itself is small (about 25,000 people) and built around two parallel streets: Rua Pedro Longo (the pedestrian main street with restaurants and shops) and the orla on the north side. Most of the town's value is outside the town: a coastal trail south of the center connects four or five secluded beaches, each a 20 to 60-minute walk from the next, separated by jungle and small streams.

The cultural register is reggae and acai, low-rise wooden architecture, and a backpacker-meets-yoga-retreat crowd that has settled here over the last two decades. Compared to Salvador, Itacare is quieter, slower, and built around the outdoors rather than around historic architecture.

Best beaches in Itacare

The beaches of Itacare fall into two clusters: the town beaches (walkable from your hotel) and the trail beaches south of town (reached on foot through the Atlantic Forest).

  • Praia da Concha: the closest beach to the town center, calm water, easy with kids, full barraca infrastructure.
  • Praia do Resende: 5-minute walk past Concha, slightly bigger waves, less crowded.
  • Tiririca: the main surf beach in town. Strong waves, surf schools on the sand.
  • Prainha: 45-minute trail walk south. Calm bay water, snorkeling on the rocks at the south end. The most photographed beach in Itacare.
  • Engenhoca: 60-minute trail walk. Open Atlantic, surf, dramatic backdrop.
  • Havaizinho and Camboinha: the next two beaches on the trail, smaller and quieter.
  • Itacarezinho: long flat beach with a single famous restaurant (Cabana Itacarezinho), reached by car or by long trail walk. Plan a half-day.

The full trail walk takes a day

From Concha to Itacarezinho on the coastal trail is about 8 km and 4-5 hours with stops. Bring water, light snacks and reef-safe sunscreen. You can stop at any beach and return by van or moto-taxi.

How to get to Itacare from Salvador

By air (fastest): fly Salvador (SSA) to Ilheus (IOS) on Azul or Latam (1h, multiple daily flights). Pre-arrange a transfer to Itacare (75 km, about 1h on the BA-001 highway). Total: 4 hours door to door.

By bus (cheaper): overnight bus Salvador to Ilheus from the rodoviaria (6-7h, R$130-180), then a local bus (Rota do Cacau) or taxi to Itacare (1h). Affordable but eats a full travel day.

By car: 480 km on a mostly two-lane highway, 6-7 hours of driving. Worth it only if you are combining Itacare with stops along the southern Bahia coast.

Best time to visit Itacare

December to March is summer in Bahia: warm, sunny most days, the busiest crowd. Surf is bigger from May to September, with smaller swells in summer; it is consistent year-round. Rain peaks in April and May; even then, days are mostly sunny with intense afternoon showers.

For Bahia-wide context, see best time to visit Salvador.

Things to do beyond the beach

  • Surf lessons at Tiririca (multiple schools, R$80-150 per class).
  • Boat trip to Marau peninsula (Taipus de Fora, Lagoa do Cassange): full-day, R$200-300.
  • Cocoa farm tour (Cabruca system): southern Bahia is the historical heart of Brazilian cocoa, 2-3h tour with chocolate tasting.
  • Cachoeira do Tijuipe: forest waterfall day trip, 30 minutes from town.
  • Stand-up paddle on the Tijuipe river or Concha bay.

How many days do you need in Itacare?

Three to four nights in Itacare cover the main beach trail (Prainha, Engenhoca, Itacarezinho), a day in town, and a day for surfing or boat trips. Five to seven nights work well if you want to add Boipeba or Marau peninsula day trips. Less than three nights is not worth the transfer time.
