Salvador, Bahia, Brazil: A Local Guide to the City

Walking tours, neighborhood breakdowns, food, safety, and the cultural context behind Salvador da Bahia. From people who actually live here.

About Salvador, Bahia

Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia, in northeast Brazil, and was the country's first capital from 1549 to 1763. It sits on the Bay of All Saints (Baia de Todos os Santos), the largest bay on the Brazilian coast, and is home to roughly 2.4 million people in the city proper and 3.8 million in the metro area.

Salvador da Bahia is the cultural heart of Afro-Brazilian heritage: capoeira, candomble, samba de roda, and the cuisine that defined northeastern Brazilian cooking all trace back here. The historic center, Pelourinho, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the wider state context, see our Bahia, Brazil travel guide.

"I had such a wonderful experience with David as my tour guide! I booked last minute and accidentally booked the tour in Spanish, but David accommodated me and gave the tour in English. I learned so much about the neighborhood and the history of Salvador from him. He also took lots of pictures of me at all the sights. I definitely recommend this tour!"
